The Blackhawks got its name from founder Frederic McLaughlin, who served as commander of the 333rd Machine-Gun Battalion of the 86th division of the U.S. Army. That division’s nickname was the Blackhawk division, commemorating a prominent Indian of the early 1800s. McLaughlin chose Blackhawks for his team in honor of his military unit. Up until 1986, there was a great deal of inconsistency in the spelling of the team’s nickname, going back and forth between one word (Blackhawks) and two words (Black Hawks). Finally in 1986, the team established its nickname as one word.
